The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in digital inspections of drone or camera images of structures is an emerging and highly innovative application.

Our drones are used to capture detailed images of buildings and infrastructure. AI is then used to analyze these images and identify structural defects, wear or other potential problems. This automated inspection method significantly speeds up the process, reduces reliance on human inspectors and provides a more accurate evaluation of the condition of structures. The interplay between image capture and AI contributes to a more efficient and cost-effective approach to inspections for our customers, allowing maintenance needs to be identified and addressed more quickly.

The added value of our ai supported inspections

Using our AI-assisted digital inspections of drone images for structures offers several advantages:

  1. Efficiency: The process of inspection is significantly accelerated because AI can quickly and automatically analyze large amounts of imagery, resulting in time savings.

  2. Cost savings: The use of drones and AI can reduce the number of human inspectors, which can reduce operational costs. In addition, potential problems can be identified early, preventing costly repairs.

  3. Accuracy: Artificial intelligence can recognize patterns and identify structural defects with consistently high accuracy, reducing human error and increasing the reliability of inspection results.

  4. Safety: The use of drones for inspections reduces the need for human inspectors to reach dangerous heights or enter hard-to-reach locations, improving personnel safety.

  5. Rapid response to maintenance needs: Automatic defect detection allows maintenance needs to be identified quickly, allowing immediate action to be taken to address potential problems before they become more severe.

  6. Documentation: The system can generate standardized reports, including detailed image information, providing better documentation for future reference and analysis.

These benefits make the combination of our drones and AI a valuable tool for improving efficiency, cost control and safety when inspecting structures in the construction and infrastructure sector.

AI supported digital inspections

To improve the efficiency and accuracy of our inspections, structural visual inspection is performed using our industry-leading AI-assisted digital inspections. Our AI detects damage not visible to the naked eye and marks it as visible. This is where an experienced stability engineer from BETONexpertise intervenes to decide how best to manage the asset for long-term efficiency and safety.

The AI categorizes the detected damage into five different classes for concrete surfaces:

  •      Fine cracks (accurate to 0.1 mm)

  •      Cracks with salt leaching

  •      Exposed reinforcement

  •      Corrosion

  •      Splashing concrete

Additional damage types are manually detected and marked by the stability engineer.

Cracks measured using our AI are always calibrated with on-site measurements using a crack microscope with an accuracy of 20μm.
